April 20

I am traveling from New England to Vancouver to teach how to turn parts for stringed instruments. Have been staying with friends along the way. This week I have been in Missoula Montana teaching my friend Bill how to make an Irish Strum stick for his wife Michelle. We had a good time.

I had a great winter teaching and making at The Center For Furniture Craftsmanship. I am now traveling and have time to share some of the projects I worked on. My first project in December was a Ukulele commission for my friend Bruce. He wanted a Uke that would inspire him as an artist. I wrote an essay about my life as an artist and transcribed it into Wing Ding Font. I wrote inside and outside on a body that is our Strumfactory.com style.  Here are some pictures.   Click here to read Bruce’s essay about the uke.

Happy New Year!

We would like to thank you all for supporting us through our first run of The Strumpet at strumfactory.com. We are already brainstorming new ideas and improvements to The Strumpet for our next run.

In the meantime, we have added a few songs for you to try.  We would love to add any songs that you have figured out and would like to share with our strumfactory community.  Videos are welcome and encouraged also!

You have your new instrument so now what do you do? You mess around until you find the beginning of a song or a chorus and then try to work out the whole song. It is fun and meditative. It doesn’t always work out like you think (speaking as a person who was not formally trained in music).  For instance, one day I was trying to play “Brown Eyed Girl”, and I came up with, “The Lion Sleeps Tonight”.  I just went with it.  This is the fun of playing.

We added some songs to try out on your Strumpets here —–>SONGS.  If you have received an instrument, you have no doubt worked out some songs of your own and we would love to hear them.

There are still some instruments left and there is still time to ship before the holidays.

The first set of instruments are done!  Many have already shipped, but there are still a few left in time for gift giving.  Now the fun begins. The playing.  As I travel, Laura is working on the support page (how to’s)  and the new how to play page with songs.  We conceived of the strumfactory.com as being a sharing site. When you figure out a song send it in and we will share our discoveries.  This week, instruments will be arriving at doors all over the country.  Feel free to comment or ask questions.

New instruments! Sea green, black, and willow green
